Comparing fractions at a glance

Sometimes we want to compare the size of different fractions. This can be done in more than one way. If we want to directly compare fractions, we need to write them as like fractions, with a common denominator. It can be very difficult to compare fractions with different denominators but if we rewrite them with like denominators, it is easy to see which numerators are greater than or less than each other. Proper fractions, improper fractions, mixed numbers and whole numbers can be compared in this way.

Another method for comparing fractions is to write them as decimals or percents. A number line from 0 to 1 or a fraction wall can also be used to help give a basic understanding of the sizes of different unit fractions and fraction comparison.

Looking forward, students can then progress to additional comparing fractions worksheets  and other number worksheets, for example a rounding worksheet or percentage worksheet.
