Rounding at a glance
Rounding numbers involves approximating numbers to make them easier to read and work with. We can round a number to any degree of accuracy including the nearest ten, the nearest hundred, nearest whole number, nearest tenth, nearest hundredth or a given number of significant figures.
In order to round a number we look at the digit to the right of the place value we are rounding to. As a general rule, if this number is 5 or more we round up whereas if it is less than 5 we round down.
For example, in order to round a 3 digit number to the nearest 100, we can picture where that number lies on a number line and decide which hundred it is closer to. Any number with less than 50 at the end will round down to the previous hundred whereas any number ending in 50 or more will round up to the next hundred.
Applying this to decimal numbers, in order to round a number to the nearest hundredth (2dp) we would look at the thousandth value. If this is 5 or more the hundredth value rounds up and if it is less than 5 the hundredth value stays the same (rounds down).
Looking forward, students can then progress to additional number worksheets, for example an equivalent fractions & ordering fractions worksheet or simplifying fractions worksheet.
