Since 2013, thousands of primary and secondary schools across the UK have chosen Third Space Learning’s high quality DfE-approved one to one tuition.
“It enables pupils to have a concentrated time with an individual tutor. I notice how focused these children are within their sessions when in class they are so easily distracted.”
Jean James
Weston Hills CofE Primary School
Pitching a lesson to 30 children who vary in ability is no easy task. Pupils often require differentiated teaching which can be difficult to achieve through whole class teaching. Third Space Learning’s diagnostic assessment allows each pupil’s unique learning gaps to be identified and targeted simultaneously by their personal one to one tutor.
An overflowing National Curriculum makes it challenging to revisit mathematical concepts once the lesson has passed. For some pupils, this lack of repetition results in ever-growing learning gaps. Multiple pupils can learn simultaneously, but each at their own pace, through one to one tutoring. Each child’s personal tutor adapts the pace of learning to suit the individual, improving knowledge retention.
It’s impossible to work one to one with each child during every lesson, address misconceptions and provide in-depth, personalised feedback. Simultaneous one to one tutoring means many pupils are able to receive individual feedback in real-time whilst addressing misconceptions; consequently, closing attainment gaps.
When pupils are unable to access learning, their concentration quickly vanishes and they lose focus. In turn, this widens gaps in knowledge and the already growing attainment gap. In a one to one learning environment pupils are able to access the concepts they require help with through simultaneous one to one tutoring, increasing focus and closing the attainment gap for multiple pupils simultaneously.
“The personalisation is second to none, and this is the only opportunity they’re going to get to have that one to one experience.”
Kate Davies, Maths Director
Outwood Grange Academies Trust
Recruitment is a huge challenge for schools, especially for maths. This means interventions are often run by non-subject specialist teaching assistants which research from EEF has found can have very little, or even negative impact on student learning. Third Space Learning tutors are DBS-checked maths specialists who successfully complete our intensive initial training programme.
One to one learning is extremely effective but it’s often difficult to fit into already busy school timetables, especially at secondary school. You need to group pupils carefully, navigate multiple pupils’ timetables and ensure you are not removing pupils from core lessons. With Third Space Learning, multiple pupils can benefit from one to one tuition at once.
With over a decade of experience working with UK schools and teachers, we’ve designed a flexible programme that fits seamlessly into your timetable. Schools can choose the best time slot that works for their school’s needs, with the flexibility to reschedule and swap in and out pupils at any time. We also provide on-demand reports for teachers that can be shared with parents to communicate pupil progress.
All pupils deserve individualised support to help them catch up and keep up with their classmates. However, private tuition is not realistic for many families. As the most affordable DfE-approved one-to-one tutoring partner, we make one to one tuition accessible for all pupils, not just those who can afford it.
90% of pupils show a solid understanding of the concept they’ve been learning.
70% of pupils who report low confidence at the start say it has improved at the end.
In an independent trial, pupils made 7 months’ progress in 14 weeks.

What does one to one tuition mean?
One to one tuition means one tutor teaching one student. It can be done face to face (in person) or via online lessons, but it must involve a real tutor teaching an individual lesson to one student, ideally based on their learning needs. While Third Space Learning’s track record is providing personalized one to one online maths tutoring sessions, the principles apply to other subjects like English or physics.
Does extra tutoring help students?
Extra tutoring has been proven to help students in numerous trials. One-to-one tuition is acknowledged to be the most effective form of tutoring, allowing for individual attention and the ability to work at the student’s own pace.
How much does one to one tuition cost?
The average cost for one-to-one tuition varies greatly depending on the location and type of tutoring provided. It can range from £15 to £45 per hour for private tutors, with the higher end representing bigger cities and GCSE and A-level tutors. Our online one-to-one tuition is more affordable, making high-quality support accessible to more schools and more learners.
