The perpendicular bisector of a line segment AB is a line, at right angles to the segment, which goes through the midpoint of the segment, cutting it in half (bisects it). To bisect a line segment, you will need a pencil, a pair of compasses and a straight edge (ruler).
There is a set method to construct perpendicular bisectors of line segments. First, place the point of the compasses on one endpoint of the line segment. With the compasses open to over half the length of the line, draw an arc. Next, move the point of the compasses to the other endpoint of the line and, without changing the angle of the compasses, draw another arc. Finally draw a straight line between the two intersections of the arcs.
It is important to note that a protractor is not used to draw a perpendicular bisector.
