If a 2D shape can be rotated and fit directly back on top of itself, it has rotational symmetry. The number of times that it can fit back on top of itself exactly as it completes a full turn about the polygon’s centre is known as its order of rotational symmetry.
For example, an equilateral triangle has rotational symmetry of order 3 as it can fit exactly on top of itself 3 times in 3 orientations. A square has rotational symmetry of order 4, a regular pentagon of order 5 and a regular hexagon of order 6. Any regular polygon has an order of rotational symmetry equal to the number of sides it has.
When finding the order of rotation of an irregular shape, such as an isosceles triangle, a parallelogram, a trapezium or a rhombus, it can be helpful to use tracing paper. We can even find the order of rotational symmetry of more complicated shapes such as snowflakes.
Looking forward, students can then progress to additional symmetry worksheets and other geometry worksheets, for example a simplifying expressions worksheet or simultaneous equations worksheet.
