Substitution at a glance

Algebra substitution involves replacing letter terms with numerical values in algebraic expressions and formulas. Positive and negative numbers, along with decimals and fractions can be substituted into a variety of different types of expressions such as linear expressions and quadratic expressions.

More complex expressions could involve brackets, indices or square and cube roots. In order to correctly evaluate an expression once values have been substituted into it we must use order of operations. Substitution is a skill that can be applied to other areas of the mathematics curriculum to substitute numbers into formulas for area, volume and speed etc..

Looking forward, students can then progress to additional simplifying expressions worksheets and on to more algebra worksheets, for example a solving equations with fractions worksheet, linear equations worksheet or simultaneous equations worksheet.
