Reflection at a glance
Reflection is one of the four transformations. It involves a mirror line and results in the shape flipping over. Each point of the original shape is the same distance from the mirror line as each point on the reflected shape on the other side of the line. Mirror lines that are commonly used in maths problems include the x axis, the y axis and the line y=x.
Reflection is one type of transformation. Other transformations include rotation, translation and enlargement. When describing a transformation from shape A to shape B, we can spot a reflection by looking for a shape that has been flipped.
Reflection links to lines of symmetry. If a shape has a line of symmetry then the shape on one side of the line is an exact reflection of the shape on the other.
