Place value at a glance

Place value charts allow you to identify the value of each digit in a number which can help when ordering numbers such as large numbers like 1 digit numbers, 2 digit numbers, 3 digit numbers, 4 digit numbers and 5 digit numbers etc.

Place value can help when writing numbers too by using partitioning, for example the whole number two hundred and thirty four would be written with a 2 in the hundreds column, a 3 in the tens column and a 4 in the ones column. They can be used to identify the digit place value in decimal numbers. Examples of decimal place values include tenths, hundredths and thousandths.

Place value is very useful when rounding numbers. For example when rounding a three digit number to a given number, you identify the place value you are rounding to, underline the digit to the right of it and then depending on the value of the underlined digit either round up or down.

Looking forward, students can then progress to additional Number worksheets, for example a Multiplying and dividing decimals worksheet or a Estimation worksheet.
