Factorising into brackets is the inverse of expanding brackets. It involves rewriting an algebraic expression so that it becomes the product of two terms in brackets.
Factorising into single brackets involves examining the coefficients of the terms in the expression and any constant term in order to calculate the highest common factor (HCF) of each of the terms. The highest common factor is then placed outside of the single pair of brackets. The HCF may be a number, a variable (a letter) or a combination of both.
Factoring to a single brackets begins with simple polynomials and moves onto more complex expressions involving indices. It is a useful skill and can help with solving equations, solving quadratic equations and simplifying algebraic fractions.
Looking forward, students can progress with more factorising worksheets to additional algebra worksheets, for example a simplifying expressions worksheet or a simultaneous equations worksheet.
