Addition and Subtraction Worksheets KS1
At EYFS, young children are developing number sense, including subitising. This is a core stepping stone to other areas of numeracy. Once in Key Stage 1, pupils learn the basics of adding and subtracting numbers. By the end of Year 1, they are expected to know addition and subtraction symbols, basic addition and subtraction facts up to 20, and solve simple one-step problems with 1-digit and 2-digit numbers.

Addition and subtraction KS2 introduces pupils to more complex addition and subtraction problems, and more sophisticated methods of solving them. Lower KS2 (Years 3 and 4) focuses on bringing children up to speed with column addition and column subtraction and solving problems involving three and four digit numbers, while upper KS2 (Years 5 and 6) looks at multi-step problems and addition and subtraction involving rounding, decimals etc.
Addition and Subtraction Worksheets Year 3
Year 3 is the first time pupils will encounter the formal written method i.e. column addition and column subtraction. This coincides with their beginning to solve problems using larger numbers, and learning to estimate answers based on their knowledge of number facts before solving formally.

At lower Key Stage 2, 8 year old pupils will learn column addition and subtraction and solve problems involving three and four digit numbers.
Use manipulatives, such as base ten, to introduce column addition and subtraction (at first, with no regrouping then introduce this idea). Then, use manipulatives alongside the written method. Once pupils are secure in their understanding, use our worksheets for Year 3 and Year 4 pupils to build their confidence.
Whichever comes first, from left to right.
Addition and subtraction are mathematical operations. BIDMAS tells us in which order to solve these when there are multiple operations in one expression: Brackets, Indices, Division and Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction.
Addition and subtraction are inverse operations, i.e. they are the opposite of each other.
Show this first using counters, then build up to using addition and subtraction expressions with the same numbers to show the relationship between the operations.
